From mountains of paper to a 50 mm disc with real-time traceability

A device of our own that stores the product information, records temperature and humidity and is read with a mobile phone.

When a batch arrives from the field, a chain of paperwork begins: documents, sample analyses, labels, system entries, photocopies, spreadsheets and temperature control. We have designed a 50 mm disc that gathers all that information on the product itself.

What the disc does

The disc encodes, modifies or deletes the product information in a compact, encrypted format, under the user's full control. It records temperature and humidity for traceability. It is read with a dedicated mobile app: no radio-frequency guns, no expensive proprietary software and no subscriptions.

For mounting, it has a magnetic surface for metal products and, in food, a double-link hook with bolt closure ready for industrial racks. It can display up to 256 identification colours.

The calculation: how to get two years from one battery

Battery life is a question of average current. With a 1,000 mAh coin cell (calculation assumption), two years is 2 × 8,760 h = 17,520 h, so the permissible average current is 1,000 mAh ÷ 17,520 h ≈ 57 µA.

That can only be achieved if the device spends almost all its time asleep (a few µA) and wakes briefly to measure and respond. That is why firmware design weighs as much as hardware design: every millisecond awake is paid for in days of battery.

Current budget for 2 years (1,000 mAh battery, assumption)
Hours in 2 years17,520 h
Permissible average current≈ 57 µA
Calculation: 1,000 mAh ÷ 17,520 h.

No intermediaries

Access to the information is restricted to the specific app. There are no third-party APIs or external platforms: the ecosystem responds on the ground, with real-time data under the control of the product owner.

Lessons for your company

  • The most reliable traceability is the one that travels with the product, not the one that lives in a spreadsheet.
  • The battery life of an IoT node is designed around average current, not battery capacity.
  • Removing intermediaries (licences, APIs) lowers operating costs and protects data.
